Thoughts From The Corner

Once again we are joined by Professor Serendip. For this post the Professor gives us food for thought in two short pieces.

As one giving private Sociology tuition I find his posts extremely worrying. There are classic Sociological texts that are proving difficult to locate and it seems that his research into the disappearance of books from library shelves is the reason why. Putting it simply – BOOKS ARE BEING THROWN AWAY! He is a person who has devoted a lifetime to academia. He has spent much of his life in libraries and if he is worried about the situation of culling books from shelves them we all should be.

Lack of space, cost of housing them, digitizing them are all reasons why books are being are being culled. How short-sighted is Man!

ANXIETY ABOUT THE FATE OF LIBRARIES, LET ALONE OF BOOKS, IS NOT A NEW THING

POUND STRETCHER FOR A POUND

In Hanley, Stoke On Trent (England), there is a ‘Pound Stretcher’ shop where every item costs a pound. There is a section in it which contains a few remaindered hardbacks. Recent examples included a charming but far from glutinous childhood memoir by Andrew Motion. At the same time one noted two quality American published volumes, a travelogue about Chile by Ariel Dorfman and a collection of letters ‘Ezra Pound’s Chinese Friends/Stories in Letters’ (ed. Zhaoming Qian. OUP N. York 2008). There were (May 2012) seven copies available for passing Pound scholars.

With books as ‘cheap as chips’ we at Experienced Tutors are concerned. On the face of it, it seems good for the buyer. Delving deeper, it is obvious that books that don’t make money will not be published. We will simply be left with those that do make money. As private tutors,we realise that the world needs more than Harry Potter, 50 Shades of Grey and cookery books.
